Move Over Google: Oakley’s Got Smart Glasses, Too - bransonhisherecur

Long before Google wowed us with its Google glasses, another companionship silently planned smart glasses of its ain. Eyewear manufacturer Annie Oakley says information technology has a 15-year start happening Google, and has been working on projecting information happening its lenses since 1997.

Both Google and Oakley's eyeglasses make water use of a technology known as augmented reality. Repute it as a blend of your virtual and real life: Data about your surroundings is placed in the field of view on the glasses, thus augmenting or enhancing world.

CEO Colin Baden told Bloomberg in an interview on Tuesday that Annie Oakley's efforts will initially target athletes. The company also has a military subsidiary legendary as Centre Safety Systems, and Baden says his company's augmented reality applied science may find a dwelling there, too. Unfortunately, He did not show the actual glasses.

Oakley appears much further along than Google in making its product a reality. However Baden is mum as to when we'll actually see Oakley's clever specs. Helium does suppose the market is "mellow" for such technology.

An Theme Not Ready for Prime Time?

What Google Project Glaze glasses might look look-alike.

The like negatives that I brought upward discussing Project Glass with my workfellow Howard Baldwin apply hither. Baden himself admits that anything Annie Oakley will release bequeath be prohibitively expensive. He also wants the project to function on its own, preferably than having several bulky accessory to wear along with the specs themselves, and that will simply add to the cost.

Will these glasses give a wearer an unsporting vantage? So much is made these days of athletes getting that from "performance-enhancing drugs." A wearer of Oakley enhanced shades could have a unambiguous advantage over the non-wearer.

Need to know when to hit that baseball? Nary dread, your Oakley shades testament tell you. A mark all time!

Then there's my biggest pet peeve with augmented reality, and that's the misdirection of IT altogether. We have plenty items attempting to draw our attention inaccurate from the real world without things whizzing around in our field of visual sense. How is wearing away these type of lenses any less distracting than texting?

I am sure there are whatsoever great uses for augmented world–perhaps easier path to communicate for a handicapped someone, for example– but, to that extent, the truly grampus applications for AR are nowhere to be set up. It's a poise idea, but mayhap it's incomparable that inevitably a little Thomas More time to mature.
